The Peridot: August Birthstone
History, legend and gemstone lore
The name peridot
is thought to have been derived
from the greek word for "giving
plenty". Ancient romans were
fond of the stone and called it
the "evening emerald".
Peridot's are said to bring peace
and good luck to the wearer. Historically
mined on the ancient Red Sea island
of Assuan (Now St. John's Island),
Peridot was used in Egyptian royal
jewelry and is said to have been
a favorite of Cleopatra.
